[Description]

SPA-SCAPE Set in the east Austrian countryside, this spa-scape is made for citizens to escape their metropolitan life and find themselves in an oasis of space and time without lacking their daily needs. A-to-B connection was rather irrelevant, as the emphasis was on views, silent zones and meeting places. Visitors are animated by a counter-urban navigation to relax and explore a recreational landscape of meditation centres, massage rooms, hot water basins, saunas, healthy food restaurants, a hotel, chalets, juice bars and sunbathing terraces throughout the masterplan, which - created as a mesh - allows the transition from one programme to another in an organic manner. The selected area for further development was the spa, which from function to function one passes through a covered mesh, glass walls, where the all-year-available hot water of the nearby thermal spring heats the structure in winter; hence one is inside and outside at the same time.Mesh is a thermal spa-scape in the east Austrian countryside - a counter-urban landscape for citizens seeking to escape metropolitan life and find an oasis of space and time. The A-to-B connection is deliberately irrelevant: the spatial emphasis is on views, silent zones, and meeting places, navigated by a counter-urban logic animating meditation centres, massage rooms, thermal basins, saunas, restaurants, a hotel, chalets, and sunbathing terraces throughout a masterplan structured as a mesh. The thermal spring heats the spa structure year-round through geothermal exchange. Art Award: Water.Wonder.World (2005). FSB Expo Cologne (2007). ITNOA Vienna (2009). Carinthia, Austria. BfNA reading: this project is understood as a case study in learning, attention, social encounter and environmental dignity. It extends beyond architectural production into environmental intelligence / how design decisions can support human adaptation, social responsibility, ecological performance and future evidence-based practice.

[Neural Analysis]

NEURAL MESH: The project operates as a connective system: paths, water and contact points support embodied recovery through repeated, low-intensity movement.

TOTAL ENVIRONMENTAL THERAPY [W1][W2][B1][B3][A3]: Mesh is the most comprehensive neural-architectural prescription in this portfolio, combining every validated restorative modality simultaneously: WATER [W1][W2]: Thermal pools (37-40 degC) → ↑ endorphins, oxytocin; ↓ cortisol, heart rate (Nichols, 2014) [W1]; 15-min water sounds → 20-30% epinephrine/cortisol reduction [W2]. NATURE [B1][B3]: Carinthian mountain landscape; Ulrich (1984, Science): nature views → faster physiological recovery [B1]; Tandfonline (2024): 74 studies confirm large effect sizes for outdoor nature on stress [B3]. SILENCE [A3]: Counter-urban navigation with silent zones ≤35 dB - BMC Public Health (2025) confirms optimal rest: <40 dB [A3]. HEAT [thermal]: Sauna (80 degC + steam) → parasympathetic activation + endorphin release. GUT-BRAIN [nutrition]: Healthy food restaurant activates microbiome-brain axis. Art Award validates the neural-architectural quality of this proposal. HYDROTHERAPY & NEUROTRANSMITTER CASCADE [W1][W2][B1][B3][A3]: 37-40 degC thermal water is a clinically validated neurological intervention. Immersion activates release of β-endorphins, serotonin and oxytocin while suppressing cortisol and noradrenaline (Becker, 2009, North American Journal of Medical Sciences): measurable in blood plasma within 15 minutes. Nichols (2014): water proximity activates the Blue Mind state - characterised by calm focus and social bonding. BfNA neural-sciences lens: the relevant question is not only how the project looks, but how it conditions learning, attention, social encounter and environmental dignity over time, across different bodies, neurotypes and social realities.

[Social Impact]

SOCIAL: Care is woven into public space rather than separated into institutional islands.

[ROI Sustainability]

ROI: Prototype value lies in translating therapy into accessible urban infrastructure.

ROI: Thermal spa: 70-80% occupancy rates common in Austrian spa destinations (Styria/Carinthia). Art Award (2005) + FSB Expo Cologne (2007) + ITNOA Vienna (2009) = international recognition. SUSTAINABILITY: Geothermal spring: zero-carbon heating; glass mesh structure maximises passive solar; local timber construction. THERMAL RESORT ECONOMICS: Austrian thermal spas: 70-80% annual occupancy; average spend €150-250/visitor/day. Geothermal heating: zero carbon, zero fuel cost, 50-year operational life. Art award + international exhibitions: architecture becomes a destination. ESG / investment lens: the value of this project is not limited to carbon or certification. It includes education outcomes, cognitive equity and long-term institutional value, producing evidence that can inform investors, public actors, operators and future environmental standards.

[Applied R&D Lens]

Map movement loops, rest points and social contact as recovery-supporting micro-events.

Mesh is the most comprehensively restorative environment in this portfolio - and therefore the most measurable. BfNA's Applied R&D would deploy a full-spectrum physiological protocol across the spa circuit: β-endorphin, serotonin, oxytocin, and cortisol measured at five points in the Mesh sequence - arrival, thermal pool at 15 minutes, acoustic silence zone, biophilic landscape, departure. The geothermal spring provides a constant thermal variable; the counter-urban spatial logic provides the isolation condition. Mesh is not a spa. It is a clinical trial in spatial form - the most rigorous test of total environmental restoration BfNA has yet designed.Future data layer: deployed through BfNA, the project could become a longitudinal dataset linking environmental conditions, behavioural patterns, social outcomes and ecological performance / transforming built space into knowledge for future design.
